Choosing the right image format

JPG is best for photos you want to share, as it is small and nearly everything can open it. PNG is best for logos, screenshots and images with transparency, because it is lossless. WEBP and AVIF are best for your own website, where smaller files help pages load faster. Read our full comparison, JPG vs PNG vs WEBP, for more detail.

Image quality you can rely on

Photos for Instagram

Instagram crops photos that are too wide or too tall. Instagram no crop places the whole picture on a suitable canvas, then fills the empty space with a blurred copy of your photo, white, black or a matching color. It also makes story-sized images and profile pictures that keep your whole photo inside the circle.

Why use these image tools

Frequently asked questions

What is the best format for photos?

JPG is the best general choice for sharing. Use WEBP or AVIF for photos on your own website.

How do I make a transparent PNG?

These tools keep transparency that already exists, but they don't remove backgrounds.

Does converting reduce quality?

Converting to JPG, WEBP or AVIF uses lossy compression, but our settings are high, so losses are hard to see. PNG is lossless.

Can I resize images here?

These tools change format rather than resize images. The exceptions are the Instagram tool, which fits your photo on a canvas, and ICO, which limits icon size.

Can I convert images on my iPhone?

Yes. The tools work in Safari and other mobile browsers.

Are my pictures private?

They are only used for the conversion, and are then deleted from the server.
