Is a photo too heavy for a form, an email or your website? Upload it, choose a level, and download a lighter copy with the same width and height.

How to use the Compress Image

  1. Upload one or more images.
  2. Choose Smallest file, Balanced or Best quality.
  3. Download your smaller image, and see what you saved.

What to expect

Same dimensions

Only the file size changes. To change the width and height too, use Resize Image.

Keeps transparency

PNG and WEBP images keep their transparent areas.

Never bigger

If an image is already well compressed, you keep the original size, and the page tells you so.

Which level to choose

LevelJPG qualityGood for
Smallest file55Upload limits and forms
Balanced72Websites, email and sharing
Best quality85Photos you want to keep looking their best

Other formats

HEIC, BMP, TIFF and similar images are saved as JPG when compressed. For websites, JPG to WEBP can often shrink files further.

If your photo must be under a set size

Online forms often ask for a photo under a small limit, such as 100 KB. A photo's width and height affect its file size as much as its quality does, so a phone photo usually needs both changes. Our guide on reducing a photo's file size for forms goes through this step by step.

What each format does

Your fileHow it's compressed
JPGSaved again at a lower quality
PNGReduced to fewer colors, or only tidied up with Best quality
WEBPSaved again at a lower quality, and it keeps transparency
HEIC, BMP, TIFF and othersSaved as a JPG. Any transparency becomes white

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce an image's file size?

Upload it, choose a level and download the smaller copy. There's no sign-up.

Can I compress a photo to 100 KB or 50 KB?

You can't type an exact size. Try Smallest file. If it's still too big, reduce its dimensions with Resize Image, and then compress again.

Will my photo look worse?

Balanced is usually hard to tell apart on a screen. Smallest file can show some loss in fine detail.

Are my images kept?

Your files are only used for this job and are deleted from the server afterwards.

Can I compress several images at once?

Yes. Select several files, and they download together in a ZIP file.
